HEX NEWSPAPER

BRIEF: The task was to create a 24 page tabloid publication based on the content written within our research project from the previous block. My research project was titled “How does Graphic Design & Visual Communication impact our day-to-day life”, so this also became the title for this issue of the newspaper.
The target audience for this publication is other Graphic Designers, or those with an interest in Graphic Design.
DEVELOPMENT: My goal was to make something that is technically accurate, and that demonstrates the skills that I have learned so far. I studied the main design principles and followed them through this item, focusing on alignment, balance, contrast, hierarchy, repetition and white space.
FINAL: I decided to go for a style that is reminiscent of classic newspaper print, but elevated with a more editorial feel. So not as much type on the pages, and more white space than you would see in a typical newspaper. To achieve the impression of a classic newspaper I have used black and white photographs and a serif typeface for headlines. For the modern edge I have made the body copy an easy to read sans serif, and introduced a feature colour which adds a pop of brightness throughout the tabloid.
The name of my tabloid is “Hex”. This comes from the term “Hex code” which is a hexadecimal formula used for identifying colours. My idea is that in each issue the feature colour will change, using a different colour, aka a different hex code, each time. The colour for this issue is #e69299.
